Where I’d Actually Take Family Photos in Alexandria

There are a million lists online telling you to take family photos in Old Town because of the cobblestones and colorful doors.

And, sure. They’re cute.

But if you’re trying to get photos that feel like your actual family and not like everyone was marched into position under mild duress, location matters a little differently.

Jones Point is great if your kids need to move. There’s room to run around, wander, climb on things, and generally forget there is a camera nearby.

Del Ray is good if you want something that feels more lived-in and less “we came here specifically to take photos.” Grab coffee from St. Elmo’s, donuts or ice cream from Just Fine Donuts/The Dairy Godmother, walk around the neighborhood, let the session happen as you go.

Old Town still works. I just like the quieter streets more than fighting for space at the waterfront with seventeen engagement sessions and a bridal party.

And honestly? Your house might be the best option.

Kids already know where everything is, pets can be involved, nobody has to load six bags into the car, and the photos end up documenting the stuff that will probably change before you realize it has.

The best place for family photos is usually somewhere everyone can stop performing and just hang out.

Which, conveniently, is also when the good pictures happen.
